Defence Road Wheels – Rubber-Tyred & Solid Road Wheels for Military Tracked Vehicles

JK Fenner Defence Road Wheels are critical running gear components that support the weight of military tracked vehicles and guide the track chain as it rotates around the suspension system. These wheels — which may be rubber-tyred (with a bonded rubber rim) or solid elastomer — run directly on the track chain, bearing the vehicle's weight while absorbing impact loads from terrain irregularities transmitted through the track. The rubber or elastomer element is essential: it cushions impact, reduces noise, and provides the friction interface that drives the track chain. JK Fenner's road wheels are manufactured with rubber compounds and bonding systems engineered for the extreme load, speed, and durability requirements of modern armoured fighting vehicles. For defence vehicle OEMs and military maintenance depots, domestically manufactured road wheels from JK Fenner reduce dependence on imported running gear components and ensure supply security for mission-critical vehicle fleets.

Bonded Rubber Rim for Impact Absorption

The rubber-tyred rim absorbs shocks from track irregularities and terrain obstacles, protecting suspension components and reducing crew vibration exposure.

High-Load-Capacity Design for Armoured Vehicles

Road wheel construction is engineered to support the significant vehicle weight of main battle tanks and heavy APCs — often exceeding 40-60 tonnes — through individual wheel stations.

Durable Rubber-to-Metal Bonding

Advanced bonding systems ensure the rubber rim remains securely attached to the wheel hub under the extreme shear, compression, and thermal stresses of high-speed tracked vehicle operation.

Heat Dissipation for Sustained High-Speed Movement

Rubber compounds and wheel design facilitate heat dissipation generated by hysteresis during continuous high-speed road marches, preventing thermal degradation of the rubber rim.

Abrasion & Cut Resistance for Cross-Country Operation

Elastomer formulations resist cutting, chunking, and abrasive wear from rocks, gravel, and debris encountered during off-road military operations.

Manufactured to Defence Specifications

Road wheels are produced to meet military-grade material, dimensional, and performance specifications, with full quality documentation and traceability.

The Role of Road Wheels in Tracked Vehicle Mobility

The road wheel assembly is one of the most heavily stressed components in a tracked military vehicle's suspension system. Each wheel must support several tonnes of vehicle weight, absorb continuous impact as the track passes over obstacles, and maintain structural and dimensional integrity during high-speed operation — all while operating in environments ranging from desert sand to Arctic snow. The rubber or elastomer rim of the road wheel is the component that makes this possible: it provides the compliant interface that prevents metal-to-metal contact between wheel and track, reduces noise signature, and extends track pin and bushing life. JK Fenner applies decades of rubber engineering expertise to road wheel manufacturing, ensuring that the rubber rim compound, bonding system, and wheel geometry are optimized for the specific vehicle weight, speed, and operational profile.

Vehicle Platforms & Road Wheel Configurations

JK Fenner defence road wheels serve main battle tanks (typically with large-diameter road wheels on torsion-bar or hydropneumatic suspension), armoured personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles (with smaller multiple road wheel stations), self-propelled artillery chassis, and other tracked defence platforms. Road wheels may be supplied as complete assemblies (hub, bearing, and rubber-tyred wheel) or as bare rubber-tyred wheels for fitment to existing hubs. Custom engineering is available for specific vehicle platform requirements.
