Adapter Sleeves

SKF adapter sleeves are split tapered sleeves used to mount bearings with a tapered bore onto cylindrical shafts. They eliminate the need for a shaft shoulder or threaded section. The bearing is driven up the sleeve using a lock nut, expanding the inner ring onto the shaft to achieve an interference fit. Suitable for spherical roller bearings, self-aligning ball bearings, CARB bearings, and many others, adapter sleeves simplify the design of long shafts, axle boxes, and conveyor drive drums. SKF sleeves are manufactured to close tolerances, with fine threads and hardened surfaces. They come in popular series like H (with keyway), HE (inch dimensions), and HA (metric, small taper). Their use reduces manufacturing costs, speeds installation, and facilitates bearing replacement.

Simplified Shaft Design

No shoulder or interference fit machining required.

Quick Mounting

Tightened with a lock nut and spanner or hydraulic nut.

Easy Dismounting

Reversed nut operation can release bearing, especially with hydraulic assist.

Multiple Dimension Series

H, HE, HA series cover metric and inch bore sizes.

High-Quality Thread and Taper

Ensures uniform expansion and reliable grip.

Accommodates Axial Adjustment

Bearings can be positioned precisely along the shaft.

Mounting Bearings with Adapter Sleeves: Step-by-Step

Slide the adapter sleeve onto the shaft, place the bearing over the sleeve, and hand-tighten the lock nut. Then use a spanner or hydraulic nut to drive the bearing up the taper until the radial internal clearance reduction is achieved. SKF provides clearance gauges and drive-up values for each size.

SKF application

Applications: Conveyor Drums, Fan Shafts, and More

Adapter sleeves allow heavy spherical roller bearings to be securely mounted on long, unshouldered conveyor pulley shafts without costly stepped diameters. This method is standard in bulk material handling and mining industries.
