Axle Seals (Automotive Driveline)

SKF axle seals are rotary shaft seals installed at the output shafts of transmissions, differentials, and drive axles to retain gear oil or ATF and exclude contaminants. They must accommodate shaft misalignment, radial runout, and, in some cases, axial movement. Heavy-duty truck axle seals feature robust metal cases and multiple lips to survive road debris, mud, and water fording. Light vehicle axle seals focus on low friction and long life with modern synthetic oils. SKF utilises HNBR or FKM for high thermal and chemical resistance, and PTFE for low-friction, high-speed applications. The seal's correct fit and material selection are critical to preventing chronic oil leaks that lead to component wear, environmental mess, and MOT/roadworthiness failures.

Heavy‑Duty Lip Design

HNBR or FKM for high‑temperature, high‑shear gear oils.

Axial Shaft Movement Tolerance

Seals accommodate differential carrier axial float.

Multi‑Lip Sealing

Primary oil lip, secondary dust lip, and sometimes a wiper lip.

Robust Metal Case

Withstands press‑fit in rough‑cast differential housings.

Garter Spring

Consistent radial load despite shaft runout.

Wide Size Range

Fits passenger car up to heavy‑truck drive axles.

Why Axle Seals Often Fail After a Differential Overheat

Overheated synthetic gear oil oxidises and forms sludge, which embeds in the seal lip, causing abrasive wear. The high temperature also softens the seal material, leading to premature lip collapse. SKF’s FKM axle seals are designed to withstand these thermal excursions, maintaining their lip profile even when the oil has temporarily exceeded its normal temperature range.

Diagnosing Axle Seal Leakage vs. Pinion Seal Leakage

Oil weeping from the axle tube end typically indicates an axle seal failure, while oil pooling near the pinion flange points to a pinion seal leak. The differential fluid level must be maintained — low oil starves the pinion bearings, leading to gear failure. SKF supplies both seals separately for targeted repair.
