Backing Bearings
Backing bearings are specialized multi-row cylindrical roller or tapered roller bearings designed to support the backup rolls in cold strip rolling mills. They must withstand very heavy, continuous radial loads and high speeds, while operating in a contaminated environment with cooling lubricants. SKF provides backing bearings with three, four, or five roller rows, featuring a stationary outer ring, a rotating inner ring shrunk onto the shaft, and optimized internal geometry for high radial stiffness and minimum vibration. Precision ground profiles and special heat treatments ensure long service life and minimal strip thickness variation. These bearings often integrate integrated lubrication channels and labyrinth sealing to manage the aggressive emulsion mists in rolling stands. SKF’s backing bearing solutions contribute directly to steel mill productivity and strip quality.

Multiple Row Configurations
3, 4, or 5 rows distribute extreme radial loads.
High Running Accuracy
Precision ground to micron tolerances for strip thickness control.
Integrated Lubrication
Internal passages deliver clean oil directly to raceways.
Robust Labyrinth Seals
Protect against coolant emulsion and metal particles.
High-Stiffness Material
Through-hardened and case-carburized rings withstand shock.
Customized for Mill Stands
SKF engineers tailor clearance and profile to specific rolls.
Role of Backing Bearings in Cold Rolling Mill Performance
Backing bearings directly influence strip flatness and gauge. SKF’s optimized crowning and preload methods combat the bending and flattening effects to maintain uniform roll gap across the strip width, even under varying load. This results in fewer rejects and higher throughput.

Maintenance and Inspection of Backing Bearings
During regular roll changes, backing bearings are inspected for spalling, cage wear, and seal integrity. SKF offers reconditioning services to regrind raceways and replace damaged components, extending the large investment these bearings represent.
