Ball Bearing Units with Composite Housings

SKF ball bearing units with composite housings utilise a high-performance, glass-fibre reinforced polymer instead of cast iron or steel. The material is strong, lightweight, corrosion-free, and resistant to a wide range of chemicals. These units are ideal for applications where water, acids, alkalis, or salts degrade traditional metal housings — such as in fertiliser production, water treatment, car washes, and coastal installations. The composite material dampens vibration and reduces noise, while the inherent flexibility provides improved bearing seating. Available in pillow block, flange, and take-up styles, with stainless steel or Zinc-coated inserts, composite units offer a long-lasting, cost-competitive alternative to all-stainless steel solutions where corrosion is the primary concern.

Total Corrosion Resistance

Polymer material will never rust, galvanically inert.

Lightweight and Strong

Up to 60% lighter than cast iron with equivalent strength.

Chemical Stability

Resists acids, alkalis, chlorides, and cleaning agents.

Vibration Dampening

Polymer elasticity reduces transmitted noise.

No Paint Required

Inherently UV-stabilised and colour-fast, eliminating coating maintenance.

Easy to Clean

Smooth surface without paint pores, suitable for semi-hygienic environments.

Composite vs. Stainless Steel Housings: Total Cost Analysis

While stainless steel offers high mechanical strength at elevated temperatures, composite housings provide equal or better chemical resistance at ambient to moderate temperatures for a lower cost. In car wash conveyors or water treatment plants, composite units eliminate rust streaks and bearing seizure, improving equipment uptime and aesthetics.

Applications in Fertiliser and Salt Handling

Ammonium nitrate and potash are highly corrosive to ferrous metals. SKF composite housed bearings withstand these aggressive environments without protective coatings, ensuring reliable operation of spreaders, conveyors, and elevator systems in bulk material handling.
