Bearing Execution

Bearing execution encompasses the final design details that tailor a standard bearing to a specific application: the selection of cage material and design, internal clearance class, precision grade, seal/shield configuration, and lubricant fill. These choices directly impact bearing performance, noise level, speed capability, and maintenance requirements. SKF offers multiple execution options for most bearing types — for instance, a deep groove ball bearing can be specified open, with shields (2Z), or with contact seals (2RS), in C3 clearance, with a polyamide or brass cage, and filled with a specific grease. The execution phase is where cost-benefit optimization occurs: upgrading to a non-contact seal reduces friction but may sacrifice some contamination protection. SKF’s product tables and online configurators guide this final step, ensuring the delivered bearing meets all functional needs without unnecessary over-specification.

Customizable Sealing Solutions

Shields, low-friction seals, or heavy-duty contact seals for varied contamination levels.

Multiple Cage Variants

Steel, brass, polyamide, or phenolic cages tailored to speed, temperature, and chemical compatibility.

Internal Clearance Options

C1, C2, C0 (CN), C3, C4, and larger clearances for thermal or interference adjustment.

Lubricant Pre-Fill Options

Factory-filled with selected SKF greases, Solid Oil, or food-grade lubricants.

Precision Specification

Choose tolerance class from Normal to P2 for required runout and noise.

Value Engineering

Match execution to actual requirements, avoiding over-engineered and costly configurations.

How to Specify Bearing Execution Parameters

Use SKF product designations to capture execution details: bearing dimension series, bore size, cage suffix, seal/shield suffix, clearance suffix, and grease fill code. For example, a 6205-2RSH/C3GJN specifies a deep groove ball bearing with HRS seals, C3 clearance, and GJN grease. Correct specification eliminates ambiguity during procurement and ensures field readiness.

The Role of Bearing Execution in Total Cost of Ownership

Choosing a sealed, pre-greased bearing for a fan application eliminates the need for relubrication and reduces maintenance staff workload. Upgrading to a brass cage for high-temperature gearbox service prevents cage failure. These execution decisions lower lifecycle costs significantly.
