Bearing Terminology (Spherical Plain)

Understanding precise terminology is essential for correct specification. This section defines terms such as sphere diameter (dₖ), inner ring width, outer ring width, housing bore, rod end shank thread, tilt angle, and oscillation angle. It covers material codes (e.g., GE..C for steel/PTFE composite, GE..TXE-2LS for steel/PTFE fabric with seals), clearance types (normal, C2, C3), and seal suffixes. Familiarity with these designations ensures accurate ordering and unambiguous communication between design, procurement, and maintenance. SKF catalogues provide illustrated term definitions for each bearing series.

Essential Definitions

Sphere diameter dₖ, tilt angle, housing bore, rod end thread clarified.

Suffix Decoding

Material codes (C, TXE, F), seal designations (2RS, 2LS), and clearance suffixes explained.

Measurement Reference Points

Where dimensions are measured on the bearing for accurate specification.

Standardised Nomenclature

Aligns with ISO 12240 and regional standards for global communication.

Quick‑Reference Graphics

Exploded views of each bearing type with parts labeled.

Mistake Prevention

Understanding terms prevents ordering a rod end with wrong thread or material.

Why “Oscillation Angle” Is Not the Same as “Tilt Angle”

The oscillation angle is the amplitude of the rotating or rocking motion, while the tilt angle is the maximum static misalignment the bearing can absorb. Confusing these leads to bearings that run hot because the sliding zone is too small. SKF’s terminology page graphically distinguishes the two, preventing this costly misunderstanding.

Reading the Designation of a Spherical Plain Bearing

For example, GE 20 TXE‑2LS: GE = radial spherical plain, 20 = 20 mm bore, TXE = PTFE fabric liner, 2LS = two‑lip seals. This systematic naming ensures that the exact material, lubrication requirement, and sealing are communicated instantly to the supplier and installer.
