CARB Toroidal Roller Bearings
CARB toroidal roller bearings are a unique SKF innovation that combines the misalignment capability of a spherical roller bearing with the axial displacement ability of a cylindrical roller bearing. The rollers are long, slightly crowned, and their raceway geometry is toroidal, enabling angular misalignment and large axial movement within the bearing. This makes CARB bearings ideal as the non-locating bearing in a shaft arrangement, accommodating thermal expansion without inducing axial friction forces. They are widely used in paper machine dryer sections, continuous caster rollers, and wind turbine gearboxes. The bearing design minimizes internal friction and runs cooler than alternatives. SKF’s high-quality steel and surface finish in CARB bearings ensure long life under heavy loads. Paired with a spherical roller bearing as the locating bearing, CARB delivers a near-perfect fixed-floating arrangement that reduces vibration and structural stress.

CARB Bearings in Paper Machine Dryers
Dryer cylinders heat up and expand significantly. A CARB bearing at the non-locating end accommodates this movement without friction, protecting the machine frame from thermal stress. The self-aligning feature compensates for dynamic deflection, increasing felt and wire life while reducing maintenance.

CARB vs. Spherical Roller + Cylindrical Roller Arrangement
Traditionally, a locating spherical roller bearing and a non-locating cylindrical roller bearing (NU) were used. The cylindrical roller allows axial displacement but generates friction; CARB does both with zero axial friction, improving energy efficiency and bearing life.
