Clutch Release Bearing Seals
SKF clutch release bearing seals are specialised radial lip seals designed to protect the clutch release bearing from transmission fluid, clutch dust, and high operating temperatures. They maintain a thin oil film to lubricate the bearing while preventing fluid leakage into the bell housing. Typically made from FKM or ACM elastomers with a metal case and garter spring, these seals withstand continuous sliding contact and the thermal cycling of clutch engagement. The seal is integral to the hydraulic or mechanical clutch release system, and its failure leads to bearing seizure and clutch drag. SKF supplies these seals to clutch system manufacturers with validated life, friction torque, and temperature ratings that match modern transmission oil specifications and clutch duty cycles.

Fluid Resistance
FKM material withstands hot transmission fluid and clutch dust.
Low Friction Lip Design
Seals do not add excessive drag on clutch fork motion.
High‑Temperature Stability
Continuous operation up to 180°C without hardening.
Spring‑Loaded Primary Lip
Maintains consistent radial force over wear.
Metal‑Case Press‑Fit
Secure retention in the release bearing bore.
OEM‑Validated Life
Tested to exceed vehicle clutch actuation cycle requirements.
Preventing Clutch Drag from a Failed Seal
If the clutch release bearing seal leaks transmission fluid onto the clutch disc, the disc slips, burns, and the vehicle is immobilised. SKF’s seal design and material selection ensure dry operation across the full service interval of the clutch, preventing this mobility‑killing failure.

Installation Note: Handling the Seal During Clutch Service
The seal lip must be protected from the sharp spline of the gearbox input shaft during installation. SKF provides a protective sleeve in its aftermarket kits, or recommends an oil‑wetted assembly grease, to prevent lip damage that would cause an immediate leak after reassembly.
