Driveline Seals (Automotive)

SKF driveline seals are critical components that seal rotating shafts in vehicle transmissions, axles, differentials, and drive shafts. The portfolio includes axle seals (output shaft seals), bonded pistons for transmission shifting, pinion seals for differential input shafts, and transmission shaft seals. These seals retain synthetic gear oils, automatic transmission fluids (ATF), and grease, while preventing ingress of water, dust, and road contaminants. Driveline seals must endure high shaft speeds, aggressive fluid additives, wide temperature swings, and sometimes high-pressure conditions. SKF employs advanced elastomers (ACM, FKM, HNBR), PTFE, and specialised polyurethanes with hydrodynamic lip features that actively pump leaked fluid back toward the sump. Reliable driveline sealing is essential for component life, fuel efficiency, and environmental compliance by preventing fluid leaks. SKF’s seals are validated to OEM-level standards for life, friction, and fluid compatibility.

ATF and Gear Oil Compatibility

Formulated for modern synthetic and low-viscosity lubricants.

Hydrodynamic Lip Designs

Pumping features actively combat leakage on high-speed shafts.

Spring-Loaded and PTFE Lip Options

Consistent radial force or low-friction dry-run capability.

Wear-Resistant Materials

HNBR and FKM for extended service intervals in high mileage vehicles.

Pressure-Resistant Designs

Sealing lips and metal cases withstand transmission case pressures.

Integrated Dust and Mud Protection

Secondary lips shield primary seal from aggressive road spray.

Pinion Seals for Light Vehicles: High Speed, Low Friction

The differential pinion flange seal is one of the most demanding driveline seals, facing high rotational speeds and splashing hot gear oil. SKF pinion seals with helix-shaped hydrodynamic features combat centrifugal leakage, while HNBR materials resist thermal ageing. The result is a dry drive pinion over the vehicle's lifetime.

Axle Seals in Heavy-Duty and Light Vehicles

Axle output shaft seals must accommodate radial runout and shaft movement. For heavy-duty trucks, SKF’s large-diameter axle seals with robust cases and multi-lip designs prevent leaks despite high loads and mud. In passenger cars, low-friction PTFE seals reduce driveline power loss, contributing to fuel economy targets.
