Filling Units

SKF filling units are systems for efficiently and cleanly transferring lubricants — grease, oil, or fluid — from original drums or bulk containers into the reservoirs of automatic lubrication systems, lubricators, and manual grease guns. They include drum pumps (manual, pneumatic, or electric), drum covers with follower plates that wipe the drum walls clean, and hose kits with filling nozzles or couplers. Using a dedicated filling unit prevents contaminant ingress during reservoir refilling, a common failure point for lubrication systems. The units are designed for ease of use, with quick-connect couplers and reliable pumps that minimise operator effort and lubricant waste. SKF filling units support sustainable, clean lubrication practices by eliminating the open-bucket-to-funnel method that introduces dirt and moisture.

Drum Pumps and Follower Plates

Efficiently extract high‑viscosity grease from original drums.

Hose and Quick‑Coupler Kits

Cleanly connect to lubrication system reservoirs.

Over‑Fill Prevention

Level switch or sight tube limits.

Air‑Operated or Electric

Match the plant’s utilities.

Portable Trolleys

Move filling unit to each system, rather than filling from drums at the machine.

Contamination‑Free

Closed circuit from drum to reservoir; no open‑bucket transfer.

Why Filling Unit Design Dictates Lubrication System Cleanliness

The most frequent cause of lubrication system contamination is dirty refill practices. An open drum and a funnel are a magnet for dust and debris. SKF’s filling units maintain a sealed path from the drum to the reservoir, using a follower plate that wipes the drum walls clean, eliminating this contamination ingress path.

SKF application

Using a Pneumatic Barrel Pump to Fill a Centralised Grease System

The pump is placed on the fresh grease barrel, the follower plate inserted, and the hose coupled to the system’s fill point. A few strokes of the air motor top up the reservoir quickly, without heavy lifting or grease spillage. The empty barrel is revealed clean and ready for reconditioning.
