Indexing Roller Units
SKF indexing roller units are compact, ready-to-install devices that combine a machined outer ring, needle roller bearing, and a polymeric or steel indexing mechanism to allow free rotation in one direction and lock in the opposite. They are used for precise one-way motion control in indexing tables, packaging machines, printing presses, and vending machines. The units can be pressed directly into lightweight, non-hardened housings. Their design simplifies assembly and reduces the number of components in intermittent motion mechanisms. SKF offers various designs for different torque capacities and indexing frequencies, including versions with integrated sealing. By preventing reverse rotation without additional brakes or ratchets, these units enable simpler, more reliable machines.

Integrated One-Way Clutch
Free rotation in free direction, instant locking in reverse.
Ready-to-Mount
Press-in outer ring eliminates housing machining for raceways.
High Indexing Accuracy
Minimal backlash for precise positioning.
Compact and Lightweight
Needle roller design saves space.
Versatile Mounting Options
Can be mounted in any orientation.
Long Service Life
Robust cam and needle design for millions of indexing cycles.
Indexing Mechanism Functionality and Applications
In a tablet press or rotary packaging machine, the indexing roller unit advances the turret one position per cycle and locks it during the filling or pressing operation. This eliminates separate ratchets and pawls, reducing mechanical complexity and maintenance.

Selection Criteria: Torque, Speed, and Duty Cycle
Choose the unit based on the required blocking torque and maximum indexing frequency. SKF’s product data includes permitted dynamic and static torques. Overload protection should be included if shock loads could exceed the unit’s rating.
