Industrial Seals

SKF industrial seals are engineered sealing products designed for rotating and static applications in heavy industrial machinery, process equipment, and demanding operating environments. This category encompasses radial shaft seals with metal cases or all-rubber construction, heavy industrial seals (HDS, HS, and CR series) for large-diameter shafts in mining, steel, pulp and paper, and marine applications, taconite seals for extreme contamination environments, V-ring seals for secondary protection, and mechnical face seals for the most challenging sealing tasks. Unlike commodity seals designed for light-duty applications, SKF industrial seals are built to withstand abrasive contamination, high temperatures, aggressive chemicals, and the elevated shaft speeds and pressures found in industrial rotating equipment. For maintenance engineers managing plant reliability, OEM designers specifying sealing for new equipment, and procurement teams sourcing replacement seals, SKF industrial seals provide the robust, long-lasting sealing performance essential for minimizing unplanned downtime and extending bearing service life in harsh industrial environments.

Heavy-Duty Construction for Demanding Industrial Applications

HDS, HS, and HSS series seals feature reinforced metal cases, heavy cross-section elastomers, and robust garter springs that maintain sealing lip contact under extreme conditions.

SKF Springcover Protection for Garter Springs

A patented design feature that shields the garter spring from contamination, preventing spring failure — a common cause of seal performance degradation in dirty environments.

SKF Wave Lip for Reduced Heat & Extended Life

The proprietary lip geometry generates a hydrodynamic pumping action that returns lubricant to the oil side, reducing under-lip operating temperature and extending seal service intervals.

Split Seal Designs Enable In-Situ Replacement

Avoid the downtime, labor, and disassembly required for solid seal replacement — SKF split industrial seals install around existing shafts, dramatically reducing mean time to repair.

Taconite Seals for the Most Contaminated Environments

Multi-stage labyrinth and contact seal combinations specifically engineered for split pillow block housings in mining, cement, and steel applications where abrasive dust is relentless.

Bore-Tite Coating Ensures Static Sealing

A proprietary coating on the seal outer diameter that fills minor housing bore imperfections, preventing the static leakage that compromises bearing lubrication and contaminant exclusion.

Taconite Seals: The Ultimate Protection for Contaminated Environments

Taconite seals represent the highest level of bearing protection available for industrial equipment operating in extreme contamination. Originally developed for the taconite (iron ore) processing industry — where fine, abrasive dust can destroy standard seals in hours — SKF Taconite seals employ a multi-stage design combining labyrinth-style non-contacting barriers with contact sealing lips and grease-purgeable cavities. This layered defense strategy systematically excludes contaminants: the external labyrinth stages block large particles, intermediate grease-filled cavities trap fine dust that penetrates the first barrier, and the internal contact lip provides the final defense, protecting the bearing from whatever minimal contamination might reach this stage. Taconite seals also reduce grease consumption by retaining lubricant within the housing more effectively than standard seal arrangements, lowering both maintenance costs and environmental impact.

Shaft Repair with SKF Speedi-Sleeves

Worn shaft sealing surfaces are a frequent maintenance challenge — replacing an entire shaft due to a grooved seal contact area is expensive and time-consuming. SKF Speedi-Sleeves provide an elegant solution: a thin-walled, precision-ground stainless steel sleeve that is pressed over the damaged shaft area, instantly restoring a smooth, correctly dimensioned sealing surface. Installation requires no shaft disassembly, machining, or heating — the sleeve is simply driven into position using the supplied installation tool. The result is a sealing surface that meets or exceeds the original shaft specification, enabling a standard-size seal to be used and extending the service life of the repaired equipment. Speedi-Sleeves are available in a comprehensive range of sizes covering shaft diameters from 12 mm to over 300 mm.
