Kingpin Seals
SKF kingpin seals are heavy-duty rotary shaft seals used in the steering kingpin assemblies of trucks, buses, and heavy trailers. They seal the kingpin thrust bearing and bushing from water, dirt, and road salt while retaining the lubricating grease. The seal typically features a metal case, a primary sealing lip with garter spring, and multiple dust lips. It must accommodate the angular articulation and axial thrust loads of the steering knuckle. SKF kingpin seals are manufactured from wear-resistant NBR or HNBR compounds with reinforced cases to withstand installation in rigid axle forgings. Reliable kingpin sealing is essential for steering precision, driver effort, and safety; a failed seal leads to corrosion, kingpin seizure, and excessive tyre wear.

The Role of the Kingpin Seal in Steering Safety
If a kingpin seal fails and the kingpin bushing runs dry, the steering becomes stiff and unpredictable. In extreme cases, the kingpin can seize, causing loss of steering control. SKF’s robust sealing ensures that the kingpin remains well‑lubricated for hundreds of thousands of kilometres, directly contributing to road safety.

Replacing a Kingpin Seal: Why It’s Not a Roadside Repair
The kingpin seal is pressed into a blind bore in the axle forging. Removing the old seal without damaging the bore requires a specialised internal puller. Installing the new seal requires a stepped driver and sometimes a thin‑wall sleeve to navigate the kingpin journal. SKF’s heavy‑truck workshop manuals detail the correct procedure and tooling.
