Lubrication Solutions

SKF lubrication solutions encompass the complete range of products, systems, and technical expertise needed to deliver the right lubricant, in the right quantity, at the right time, to every critical bearing and friction point in industrial machinery. Effective lubrication is arguably the single most important factor determining bearing service life — industry research consistently identifies inadequate or incorrect lubrication as the leading cause of premature bearing failure. The SKF lubrication portfolio spans automatic lubrication systems (single-point and multi-point lubricators, progressive and dual-line centralized systems, oil circulation systems), lubrication system components (pumps, metering devices, control units, fittings, and accessories), specialty lubricants (bearing greases formulated for specific operating conditions), and solutions for special applications (chain lubrication, railway wheel flange lubrication, and food-grade lubrication). For reliability engineers implementing proactive maintenance programs, plant managers seeking to eliminate manual lubrication inconsistencies, and OEMs integrating automated lubrication into new machinery, SKF lubrication solutions provide the technology foundation for extending bearing life, reducing lubricant consumption, and improving machinery availability.

Automatic Lubrication Eliminates Manual Inconsistency

SKF single-point and multi-point automatic lubricators deliver precise, metered grease or oil volumes on a programmed schedule, eliminating the under- and over-lubrication that manual methods inevitably produce.

System 24 Gas-Driven Lubricators for Simplicity

Tool-free activation and time-setting enable easy deployment of single-point lubricators filled with SKF high-performance greases, providing 1-12 months of unattended bearing relubrication.

Centralized Lubrication Systems for Large Plants

Progressive, dual-line, and oil circulation systems serve dozens or hundreds of lubrication points from a central pumping station, dramatically reducing maintenance labor while improving lubrication consistency.

Application-Specific Lubricant Formulations

SKF greases are specially developed for bearing applications, with variants optimized for high temperatures, high loads, high speeds, food-grade requirements, and extreme contamination resistance.

Connected Lubricators with Remote Monitoring

The SKF SYSTEM 24 TLDD series enables wireless monitoring of automatic lubricator status, alerting maintenance teams to low lubricant levels or blockages before bearings run dry.

Worldwide Lubrication Engineering Support

SKF provides lubrication system design, installation support, lubricant selection guidance, and lubrication audit services through a global network of lubrication specialists.

The Cost of Poor Lubrication: Why Automation Matters

Manual bearing relubrication is inherently inconsistent. Different technicians apply different grease quantities using different techniques at different intervals. Hard-to-access lubrication points are frequently skipped. Grease guns may be contaminated with dirt or contain the wrong lubricant. The results are predictable: over-lubricated bearings overheat and purge grease through seals, while under-lubricated bearings starve and fail. Studies conducted by SKF and other bearing manufacturers have consistently found that 30-50% of all premature bearing failures are lubrication-related. Automatic lubrication systems eliminate this variability. Each bearing receives precisely the calculated quantity of clean, correct lubricant at exactly the right interval, whether the machine is running or stopped. The return on investment comes from extended bearing life (fewer replacements), reduced lubricant consumption (up to 50% reduction versus manual methods), lower maintenance labor costs, and — most significantly — reduced unplanned production downtime.

Choosing Between Single-Point and Centralized Lubrication

The choice between single-point automatic lubricators and centralized multi-point systems depends on the number of lubrication points, their physical distribution within the facility, and the criticality of the equipment being lubricated. Single-point lubricators (SKF SYSTEM 24, TLSD, TLMP series) are ideal for isolated bearings, small groups of 2-18 points, and applications where running lubrication piping would be impractical. They are battery or gas-driven, self-contained units that can be deployed quickly without infrastructure investment. Centralized lubrication systems become economically advantageous when lubricating dozens or hundreds of points across a machine line or facility. A central pump, reservoir, and controller serve multiple metering devices connected by tubing, delivering precise lubricant volumes to every point. Centralized systems offer the lowest per-point lubrication cost in large installations and enable features such as system monitoring, low-level alarms, and integration with machine control systems.
