Lubrication (Bushings, Thrust Washers and Strips)
SKF composite bushings, thrust washers, and strips are designed for dry running; external lubrication is generally not required and may even be detrimental if it attracts contaminants. However, in some applications, an initial grease application during assembly facilitates running-in and protects the mating shaft from corrosion. SKF specifies which materials are compatible with oils, greases, and chemicals. Bronze bushings, on the other hand, require regular oil or grease lubrication to maintain their performance. SKF’s guidance ensures that the lubrication strategy matches the material choice to avoid premature failure or incompatibility swelling.

Composite Dry‑Run Philosophy
Designed to run without any external lubrication.
Initial Running‑In Lubrication
A thin smear of compatible grease on shaft can reduce early wear.
Bronze Requirement
Regular oil or grease needed; oil grooves and holes for lubricant distribution.
Food‑Grade Compatibility
NSF H1 greases available for incidental food contact.
Contamination from Lubrication
Grease can attract dirt; avoid on composite bushings if not needed.
Lubricant Incompatibility Risk
Some greases swell thermoplastics; compatibility must be checked.
Why Adding Grease to a Sealed Composite Bushing Can Be Detrimental
In a food plant, a composite bushing is designed to run dry and not harbour bacteria. If a technician injects grease, it can leak out, trap food residues, and create a hygiene issue. SKF’s Food Line bushings are explicitly pre‑lubricated with a food‑grade lubricant and sealed; no additional grease is ever needed.

Selecting the Correct Oil for Bronze Bushings in High‑Speed Applications
A light circulating oil (ISO VG 32‑68) carries heat away and maintains a hydro‑dynamic film at speed. For slow, oscillating bronze bushings, a high‑viscosity grease with solid EP additives is preferred. SKF’s lubrication guide for plain bearings connects the bearing material to the appropriate lubricant family.
