Lubrication (Spherical Plain Bearings)

Lubrication requirements depend entirely on the sliding material. Steel-on-steel bearings must be regularly relubricated with grease containing EP and anti-wear additives to prevent corrosion and reduce friction. Bearings with PTFE fabric or composite liners are designed to run dry and relubrication is generally not recommended, as it can disturb the self-lubricating film. SKF provides clear lubrication guidelines for every bearing and rod end series, including grease type recommendations and relubrication intervals where applicable. Adhering to these guidelines maximises bearing life.

Steel‑on‑Steel Requirement

Must be greased with EP lithium complex grease or heavy‑duty open‑gear lubricant.

PTFE‑Lined Bearings

Run dry; lubrication not recommended as it can disturb the transfer film.

Initial Assembly Grease

Composite bearings benefit from a thin initial film to aid running‑in.

Grease Path Design

Bearings with lubrication holes and annular grooves distribute grease evenly.

Lubricant Compatibility with Seals

Must not swell or degrade the integral seals (if fitted).

Cleanliness During Assembly

All lubricant must be free of dirt to avoid three‑body abrasion.

Why You Should Never Grease a PTFE‑Lined Spherical Plain Bearing

PTFE fabric liners work by depositing a thin transfer film of PTFE onto the mating metal surface. Introducing grease can prevent this film from forming, increase friction, and lead to accelerated wear. SKF’s guidance is clear: if the bearing suffix includes “TXE” or “C” (composite), do not grease it.

Setting Up a Grease Schedule for Steel‑on‑Steel Bearings on a Construction Site

For an excavator with 30 grease points, a planned route with a battery‑powered grease gun ensures every bearing is purged. SKF provides a laminated site‑specific chart showing nipple locations, required grease type, and stroke count per bearing. This simple system eliminates missed lubrication and dramatically extends pin and bearing life.
