Magnetic Encoders (Automotive Bearing Seals)

SKF magnetic encoder seals integrate a multi-pole magnetic ring into the elastomeric or polymer body of a bearing seal, providing wheel speed, angular position, and direction data directly from the bearing. Used extensively in automotive hub bearing units for ABS, traction control, and electronic stability control (ESC), these encoder seals eliminate the need for a separate tone ring and sensor, reducing weight, component count, and assembly complexity. The magnetic particles are precisely oriented and protected within the seal material, immune to corrosion, dirt, and brake dust. SKF supplies encoder seals with different pole counts and signal formats (passive and active) to match vehicle OEM electronic control units. Their reliability is paramount — a failed encoder signal can disable critical safety systems. SKF’s encoder seals are validated for mechanical and electromagnetic performance across full temperature and speed ranges.

Multi‑Pole Elastomer or Plastic Ring

30‑100 pole pairs, precision oriented.

Corrosion‑Proof

Magnetic particles embedded in resistant polymer; no ferrous tone ring to rust.

Integrated into Bearing Seal

Saves space, weight, and assembly time versus a separate sensor target.

Active and Passive Signal Formats

Matches ECU requirements (VR‑sensor or Hall‑effect compatible).

Temperature‑Stable Output

Signal remains within spec from ‑40°C to 150°C.

Validated Electromagnetic Compatibility

Does not interfere with other vehicle electronics.

Why Integrated Encoder Sealing Simplifies the Wheel End Assembly

Instead of bolting a steel tone ring to the hub and mounting a separate sensor bracket, the encoder seal provides the magnetic target within the sealed bearing unit. This reduces components by two per wheel, cuts vehicle weight, and eliminates the alignment tolerance stack that causes ABS sensor faults.

Testing Magnetic Encoder Integrity

Every SKF encoder seal is tested on‑line with a precision magnetic‑field mapper. The mapping confirms that the pole count, magnetisation amplitude, and magnetic centre are correct. This 100% test rejects any unit that would generate an intermittent wheel‑speed signal, preventing warranty‑return‑inducing ABS lamp illuminations.
