Minimal Quantity Lubrication Systems

Minimal quantity lubrication (MQL) systems deliver an extremely fine aerosol of oil droplets (typically 5-50 ml/hour) to the cutting zone in machining operations or to lightly loaded chains and bearings, replacing traditional flood coolant or bulk grease lubrication. SKF’s MQL systems are particularly used in metal cutting (near-dry machining) where they reduce coolant purchase, filtration, cleaning, and disposal costs while improving the working environment. The precise, pressurised aerosol is generated in a mixing valve and transported via narrow hoses to the application point. For bearings and chains, MQL provides adequate lubrication with minuscule consumption, minimising both waste and component wear from over-lubrication. SKF MQL systems are controllable, monitorable, and easily integrated into machine tools and process equipment. The technology supports sustainable manufacturing targets by dramatically decreasing industrial lubricant usage.

Ultra-Low Lubricant Consumption

0.01-0.05 l/hour compared to litres in flood coolant systems.

Near-Dry Machining

Eliminates flood coolant management, reducing handling, filtration, and disposal costs.

Cleaner Work Environment

No splashing, minimal airborne mist, healthier for operators.

Precise, Repeatable Aerosol Delivery

Adjustable oil/air ratio for specific lubrication needs.

Reduced Component Cleaning

No need to degrease machined parts.

Environmentally Sustainable

Drastic reduction in industrial oil waste and CO2 footprint.

MQL in Metal Cutting: The Shift to Near-Dry Machining

Traditional flood coolant systems in gear cutting and milling consume vast amounts of coolant that must be filtered, treated, and disposed of. SKF MQL delivers a fine, pressurised oil aerosol directly to the cutting tool edge, providing the necessary lubrication and cooling with minimal fluid, eliminating coolant sumps and reducing energy costs for high-pressure coolant pumps.

MQL for Chain and Bearing Lubrication

In bottling plants and food packaging lines, MQL systems lubricate conveyor chains with a tiny amount of food-safe oil, eliminating the mess of drip-feed lubrication and preventing product contamination. The precise application also prevents slip-stick and reduces chain wear without excess oil pooling on the factory floor.
