Monitoring Devices for Use with Lubrication Systems

SKF monitoring devices verify and record the operation of automatic lubrication systems, ensuring that lubricant is delivered as programmed and providing early warning of system faults. The range includes flow sensors, proximity and pressure switches, cycle indicators (visual and electronic), and level switches for reservoirs. These devices can be wired to system controllers, machine PLCs, or plant-wide SCADA/CMMS, enabling real-time alerts if a line is blocked, a reservoir is low, or a system has failed to cycle. Monitoring devices transform the lubrication system from an open-loop timer into a closed-loop, verifiable process, which is essential for critical machinery and for achieving reliability-centred maintenance (RCM) goals. SKF’s sensors are robust, designed for the pressures and environments of lubrication systems, and provide gold-plated contacts for reliable low-voltage signals.

Piston Cycle Proximity Switches

Confirm progressive or dual‑line distributor cycle.

Flow Meters and Flow Switches

Measure actual volume dispensed (oil systems).

High/Low Pressure Transmitters

Detect blockages, leaks, and empty reservoirs.

Level Switches

Ultrasonic or float type for grease and oil tanks.

Lubricant Temperature Sensors

Protect system from overheating or freeze‑up.

Interface Modules

Convert sensor signals to standard 4‑20 mA or digital bus for PLC.

How a Flow Meter Closes the Loop on Oil Delivery

An oil circulation system for a steam turbine uses an in‑line flow meter on the bearing supply line. If flow drops below the alarm setpoint (indicating a blocked strainer or pump failure), the DCS triggers a standby pump start and alarms the operator, protecting the turbine bearings from oil starvation within seconds.

Ultrasonic Level Sensing for Grease Reservoirs

Unlike float switches that can get stuck in stiff grease, ultrasonic level sensors measure the distance to the follower plate through the reservoir wall. They provide a continuous 4‑20 mA signal proportional to remaining volume, allowing the CMMS to predict the exact day a refill will be needed.
