Mounting (Bushings, Thrust Washers and Strips)

Mounting SKF plain bushings involves press-fitting into a housing with the correct interference. For composite bushings, a mounting mandrel is recommended to guide the bushing and prevent tilting or damage to the thin wall. Thrust washers are typically retained by a shoulder, snap ring, or adhesive. Strips can be bonded or screwed into place. SKF provides housing bore tolerances, recommended insertion chamfers, and post-mounting calibration procedures if bore shrinkage occurs. Correct mounting ensures the bushing remains fixed in the housing and maintains its designed running clearance, preventing noise, wear, and bearing walk-out.

Press‑Fit with Guided Mandrel

Ensures bushing enters housing squarely without tilting.

Adhesive Bonding

Epoxy for thin strips or where press‑fit is impractical.

Snap‑In Designs

Some plastic bushings have a flange and a snap groove for retention.

Post‑Mounting Bore Calibration

Reaming or burnishing to achieve final running clearance.

Thrust Washer Retention

Seated in a counterbore or held by a snap ring.

Strip Clamping or Screwing

Countersunk screws or clamps for large guide strips.

Preventing Composite Bushing Cracking During Press‑Fit

The housing bore must have a generous lead‑in chamfer (15‑20°) and the bushing must be supported internally by a close‑fitting mandrel during pressing. If the unsupported bushing wall buckles, it cracks. SKF specifies the exact chamfer angle and insertion speed to protect the bushing during assembly.

SKF application

Bonding Strips onto Linear Guideways

Clean the metal surface and the strip back with acetone. Apply a two‑part epoxy designed for thermoplastics, press the strip in place, and clamp or weight it for the full curing time. Once cured, the strip forms a permanent, wear‑resistant slide surface that can be re‑machined if necessary.
