Needle Roller Bearings

SKF needle roller bearings are rolling bearings with long, thin cylindrical rollers — needles — that provide exceptionally high radial load capacity within a minimal cross-sectional height. When radial space is severely constrained but loads are significant, needle roller bearings deliver a compact, economical solution unmatched by other bearing types. The SKF needle roller bearing portfolio includes needle roller and cage assemblies, drawn cup needle roller bearings (with open or closed ends), needle roller bearings with machined rings (with or without inner rings, with or without flanges), combined needle roller bearings (integrated with angular contact ball or thrust ball bearings for axial load accommodation), and needle roller thrust bearings. Alignment needle roller bearings and cam followers (stud-type track rollers) further extend the application range. For design engineers working on automotive transmissions, motorcycle engines, connecting rods, rocker arms, universal joints, and compact gearboxes, SKF needle roller bearings offer the optimal balance of load capacity, stiffness, and space efficiency.

Ultra-Low Cross-Sectional Height Saves Space

Needle roller bearings fit where other bearing types cannot — their slim profile enables compact machinery designs without sacrificing load capacity or stiffness.

High Load Capacity from Large Roller Populations

With numerous small-diameter rollers making line contact, SKF needle roller bearings achieve impressive radial load ratings relative to their cross-sectional dimensions.

Drawn Cup Bearings for Cost-Effective Solutions

SKF drawn cup needle roller bearings, with thin-walled pressed steel outer rings, provide an economical bearing arrangement where the housing bore can serve as the outer ring raceway.

Combined Bearings Handle Complex Loading

Needle roller/angular contact ball bearings and needle roller/thrust ball bearings accommodate radial loads plus axial loads in one or both directions, eliminating the need for separate bearing components.

Machined Ring Bearings for Demanding Applications

When higher precision, speed capability, or load capacity is required, SKF needle roller bearings with machined rings offer superior performance compared to drawn cup designs.

Sealed Variants for Extended Grease Life

Integral sealing on selected needle roller bearing designs retains lubricant, excludes contamination, and extends maintenance intervals — particularly valuable in automotive and mobile equipment applications.

Needle Roller Bearing Configurations: Drawn Cup vs. Machined Rings

SKF offers two primary needle roller bearing construction types, each suited to different application requirements. Drawn cup needle roller bearings feature a deep-drawn, thin-walled outer ring made from case-hardened steel. They are compact, lightweight, and economical, making them ideal for high-volume applications in automotive transmissions, power tools, and consumer products where housing bores can serve as the outer raceway. However, drawn cup bearings have lower speed ratings and require precisely machined, hardened, and ground shaft surfaces. Needle roller bearings with machined rings, manufactured from carbon chromium bearing steel, provide higher precision, greater speed capability, and superior load-carrying capacity. They are available with or without inner rings and with or without flanges on the outer ring, offering design flexibility for industrial gearboxes, machine tools, and other demanding applications.

Applications Where Needle Roller Bearings Excel

Needle roller bearings thrive in applications where radial space is at a premium. Automotive engine connecting rods, transmission planetary gears, and rocker arm pivots all depend on needle roller bearings to manage high oscillating or rotating loads in tightly constrained spaces. In motorcycle and small engine applications, needle roller bearings support crankshafts, camshafts, and transmission shafts with minimal weight and space penalty. Industrial applications include printing press rollers, textile machinery components, and compact gearbox designs where needle roller bearings provide the needed load capacity without expanding housing dimensions. Universal joints, constant-velocity joints, and steering linkages in both automotive and industrial equipment rely on needle roller bearings for reliable articulation under load.
