NoWear Coated Bearings
NoWear is a SKF proprietary coating applied to bearing rollers or raceways that significantly reduces friction and wear, especially under conditions of poor lubrication or high contamination. The thin, diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating is extremely hard yet flexible, protecting the underlying steel from adhesive wear, scuffing, and particle-induced surface stress. NoWear coated bearings can operate with thinner lubricant films, extend relubrication intervals by up to 10 times, and survive temporary lubricated starvation without immediate failure. They are used in wind turbine gearbox planetary stages, paper machine guide rolls, and compressors. The coating enhances reliability in applications where traditional bearing life is limited by smearing or white etching cracks (WEC). Upgrading to NoWear bearings reduces total cost of ownership by lowering maintenance frequency and preventing unexpected outages.
