Pillow Block Roller Bearing Units
Pillow block roller bearing units are two-piece or split housings with a spherical roller bearing insert, mounted on a flat base. SKF’s SNL, SAF, SDAF, and SONL series cover shaft diameters from 25 mm up to over 500 mm. They are the primary choice for heavy fans, conveyor pulleys, hammer mills, and crusher shafts. The robust cast iron or ductile iron housing supports high radial loads, while the spherical roller bearing self-aligns under misalignment. Split housings allow replacement of the bearing without moving the shaft. Integral grease paths and seals protect the bearing from dust, moisture, and process contamination. This design has been the industrial standard for decades, providing a proven, reliable bearing arrangement for demanding rotating equipment.

SNL vs. SONL Housings: What’s the Difference?
SNL housings are the classic split plummer block design for grease lubrication. SONL series are oil-lubricated variants with integrated oil sump, sight glass, and cooling possibilities — preferred for high-speed fans and paper machine sections where heat dissipation is critical.

Sealing Options for Pillow Block Units in Mining
In extremely dusty iron ore mines, taconite seals with multiple labyrinth stages and grease purge prevent abrasive ingress. SKF’s sealed spherical roller bearings with integrated contact seals offer an additional line of defence inside the housing, dramatically extending regreasing intervals.
