Polyurethanes (SKF Industrial Seals)
SKF’s polyurethanes, particularly the Ecopur family, are high-performance thermoset elastomers formulated specifically for hydraulic and rotary sealing applications. Ecopur offers a premium balance of high abrasion resistance, excellent tensile and tear strength, low compression set, and broad fluid compatibility. Compared to standard thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), Ecopur exhibits superior resistance to hydrolysis and better stability at elevated temperatures (up to 110°C continuous). It is the standard material for many SKF U-cup rod seals, piston seals, and wipers. Different Ecopur grades are available for specific fluids or temperature requirements. By controlling the polymer chemistry and processing, SKF delivers consistent, reliable seal performance that extends cylinder service life and reduces leakage in demanding mobile and industrial hydraulic systems.

Ecopur Primary Benefit
Up to 5x the hydrolysis resistance of standard TPU.
High Abrasion Resistance
Ideal for wiper seals and dynamic applications.
Low Compression Set
Maintains sealing force over time in hot oil.
Custom Hardness Range
70A to 65D for different pressure‑velocity combinations.
Internal Lubrication Add‑ins
Pre‑compounded MoS₂ or PTFE for reduced friction.
Colour‑Coded Grades
Easy visual identification of material grade.
Why Ecopur Keeps Working When Standard Polyurethanes Fail
Standard polyester‑based TPUs revert (soften and become sticky) in hot, humid oil. Ecopur’s special polyether backbone resists this chemical attack, maintaining its hardness and lip profile for thousands of additional hours. This difference alone can double hydraulic cylinder seal life in tropical mining operations.

Machined vs. Moulded Polyurethane: Same Material, Same Performance
A common myth is that machined seals are weaker. SKF’s SEAL JET uses stress‑relieved Ecopur stock that retains the same molecular structure as a moulded part. Extensive testing has shown identical wear and pressure performance, making machined Ecopur a fully validated option.
