Rail Wheel Lubrication

SKF rail wheel lubrication systems are designed for the flange and rail head lubrication of train, tram, and light rail vehicle wheels. These on-board systems apply a precise, minute amount of grease or oil to the wheel flange or the rail gauge face as the vehicle operates, reducing friction, noise (squeal), and wear at the wheel-rail interface. SKF’s solution typically includes a pump, controller, and applicator nozzles directed at the wheel flange. The system can be activated by curves, track sensors, GPS, or time/distance. Reducing flange friction saves energy, extends wheel and rail life, and significantly cuts noise in urban environments. SKF supplies both new-build and retrofit solutions, working with rolling stock manufacturers and transit operators. The system is designed for the high vibration and environmental exposure of the rail vehicle underframe.

On-Board Lubricant Application

Lubrication applied by the train, where and when needed.

Curve-Selective Activation

Lubricates only in curves or at specific track segments, saving lubricant.

Reduced Wheel/Rail Wear

Extends service intervals for wheel re-profiling and rail grinding.

Noise Reduction

Minimises the flange squeal in sharp curves and residential areas.

Energy Savings

Lower rolling resistance leads to measurable traction energy reduction.

Winterised Configurations

Systems for extreme cold climates with heated lubricant reservoirs.

Wheel Flange Lubrication for Light Rail and Metros

Trams and metros navigate tight-radius curves in city streets, generating significant high-frequency squeal noise. SKF’s on-board flange lubrication precisely mists a biodegradable lubricant onto the flange as the vehicle negotiates curves, eliminating the noise source and protecting both the wheel and the rail from rapid flange wear and corrugation.

Environmental Considerations: Biodegradable Lubricants

To avoid soil and groundwater contamination along the track, SKF’s rail lubrication systems are compatible with readily biodegradable synthetic and vegetable-based lubricants. The delivery system minimises overspray and drip, further reducing environmental impact while maintaining effective lubrication.
