Rotary Seals (Machined)
Machined rotary seals are custom radial shaft seals produced via the SEAL JET process for large shaft diameters (commonly >300 mm) and special housing dimensions. Whether replacing a failed seal on a 50-year-old turbine bearing or designing a prototype gearbox, SKF can machine the exact profile and material needed. The seals are machined from solid elastomeric or polyurethane stock, with precise lip geometry tailored to the shaft speed and oil type. They can incorporate single, double, or dust lips, garter springs, and hydrodynamic pumping aids. The result is a genuine SKF rotary sealing solution that fits perfectly and delivers leak-free performance without the prohibitive cost of a custom mould. This service keeps critical rotating assets operational with minimal downtime.

Custom Lip Material
HNBR, FKM, polyurethane, or PTFE based on application.
Integrated Wear Sleeves
Large seals can include a machined sleeve for worn shafts.
Non‑Standard Housings
Seals machined to fit oversize or damaged bores.
Hydrodynamic Features
Helical pumping grooves for zero‑leakage performance.
Short Lead Time
Prototypes in days, production seals in weeks.
On‑Site Machining of a Large Propeller Shaft Seal
The tail shaft seal of a dredger was leaking. SKF’s service team used a portable SEAL JET machine to machine a new seal directly on‑board from a polyurethane tube, without dry‑docking the vessel. The repair was completed within the crew’s working shift.

Solving a Chronic Wind Turbine Main Bearing Seal Leak
The original cassette seal was no longer available. SKF machined a heavy‑duty dual‑lip FKM seal with an integral wear sleeve to replace it, restoring the main bearing protection and eliminating the oil leak that was causing frequent topping‑up and environmental reporting.
