SKF
SAF and SAW Series (Inch Dimensions)
The SAF and SAW series are SKF’s standard inch-dimension split pillow block housings. SAF housings accommodate self-aligning ball bearings and spherical roller bearings with cylindrical bores or mounted on adapter sleeves for narrower bearing series. SAW housings are wider, designed primarily for bearings mounted on adapter sleeves in larger width series. Both types are cast from high-strength grey iron, with a two-piece cap and base, deep lubrication cavities, and machined surfaces for labyrinth or lip seals. These housings are found on belt conveyor pulleys, mine fans, hammer mills, and crushers throughout North America and in globally sourced equipment. The robust split design allows bearing replacement without removing the shaft, and the standardised bolt pattern ensures easy retrofitting. SKF’s precision-machined bore seats ensure proper bearing alignment, preventing induced loads that reduce bearing life.

Imperial Standard Sizes
Match existing inch shafting and bolt layouts.
Adapter Sleeve Compatibility (SAW)
Wide body accommodates adapter nut and sleeve.
High-Quality Casting
Grey iron meets ASTM standards for strength and vibration damping.
Easy Bearing Replacement
Top cap removal allows direct bearing access.
Seal Flexibility
Grooves for standard labyrinth, felt, or rubber lip seals.
Accessory Integration
Accepts SKF end covers and stabilising rings.
Mounting Bearings in SAF/SAW Housings
Bearings with tapered bores are driven up the adapter sleeve using a lock nut. The wide cavity of SAW allows this assembly to fit without interference. The axial location is then fixed using locating rings in the housing grooves. This system compensates for minor shaft tolerances and simplifies installation.

Typical Applications in US Heavy Industry
Iron ore processing plants and coal-fired power stations commonly use SAF housings on conveyor drives. Their availability from local SKF distributors in common sizes like SAF 22518 (3-1/4") ensures rapid spares deployment, minimising the impact of unplanned failures.
