SKF
Sealing (Mounted)
Sealing protects the mounted bearing from contamination and retains lubricant. SKF designs include integral bearing seals, housing seals (labyrinth, lip, V-ring), and special seals for dusty or wet environments. Multiple sealing stages can be combined. Selecting the right seal system based on particle type, water presence, and shaft speed is critical for achieving the calculated bearing life.

Integral Bearing Seals (R‑seals)
Contact rubber lips for general contamination protection.
Housing Labyrinth Seals
Non‑contact, speed‑independent, ideal for high‑speed and heavy dust.
Taconite Multi‑Stage Seals
Grease‑filled labyrinths for extreme mining dust.
V‑Ring and Flinger Combinations
Centrifugal protection plus static lip for splash water.
End Covers and Dished Covers
Seal the housing bore completely, especially on non‑drive ends.
Rubber Seating Rings
Seal the interface between bearing OD and housing bore.
Designing a Multi‑Barrier Seal System
A single lip seal often fails in heavy contamination. SKF’s approach layers a V‑ring flinger, a labyrinth, and a contact lip seal to create 3‑4 barriers. Contaminants must pass each stage, and the grease in the labyrinth captures what penetrates. This extends regreasing intervals by a factor of 5 or more in mining.

Converting a Standard Housing for Enhanced Sealing
Many standard SNL or SAF housings can be retrofitted with taconite seals by machining the outboard seal seat. SKF provides seal‑upgrade kits with detailed modification drawings, allowing plants to bring legacy equipment up to modern contamination‑exclusion standards without replacing the entire housing.
