Sealing, Mounting and Dismounting
Proper sealing, mounting, and dismounting are the final critical elements of a reliable rolling bearing arrangement. Sealing protects the bearing from contamination and retains lubricant; it can be integral to the bearing (seals or shields) or part of the housing (radial shaft seals, labyrinths, V-rings). Mounting methods — mechanical, hydraulic, or thermal — must apply force evenly without damaging raceways. SKF provides a full range of mounting tools, induction heaters, and hydraulic nuts/pumps that ensure safe, correct installation. Dismounting, especially withdrawal of bearings mounted with interference fits, requires similar precision to avoid bending the cage or damaging shafts. SKF bearing pullers, hydraulic injection, and custom withdrawal methods protect components during maintenance. Guidelines for sealing, mounting, and dismounting complete the bearing selection process, ensuring that the design’s theoretical life is achieved in practice.

Bearing Sealing Solutions to Maximize Service Life
Integrating the right seal depends on peripheral speed, lubricant type, pressure differential, and contamination type. For greased bearings in dusty environments, a contact seal with an additional V-ring provides dual protection. For oil-lubricated gearboxes, labyrinth or gap seals are preferred. SKF’s seal selection guide ensures the bearing remains contaminant-free.

Best Practices for Mounting and Dismounting Bearings
Always use the bearing’s inner or outer ring as the pressing component — never transmit force through rolling elements. Heat the bearing evenly with an induction heater to between 80°C and 110°C above shaft temperature for interference fits. For dismounting, SKF hydraulic nuts apply uniform withdrawal force, preventing brinelling. These practices dramatically reduce early-life failures.
