Slewing Bearings
Slewing bearings are large-diameter rolling bearings that can simultaneously accommodate high radial, axial, and moment loads. SKF slewing bearings feature a ring design with internal or external gear teeth, bolt holes for direct attachment to mating structures, and integrated sealing. They are used as rotation interfaces in cranes, excavators, wind turbine yaw and pitch systems, tunnel boring machines, and medical scanners. SKF manufactures standard and customised slewing bearings with ball or cylindrical/tapered roller elements, in single or multiple row configurations, and with diameters up to several metres. The design eliminates the need for a separate shaft and housing, reducing weight and structural complexity. SKF provides application engineering to analyse load spectra, calculate bolt strength, and specify the optimal bearing, gearing, and lubrication system for reliable, long-life operation.

Slewing Bearings in Wind Turbine Yaw and Pitch Systems
A wind turbine nacelle yaws to face the wind using a large slewing bearing with external gear teeth. The bearing must withstand variable wind loads and extreme weather with minimal maintenance. SKF bearings provide the necessary fatigue life and sealing to achieve 20-25 year design targets.

Selecting the Right Slewing Bearing Raceway Design
Single row four-point contact ball bearings suit moderate loads and compact spaces. Crossed cylindrical roller bearings provide very high stiffness and accuracy for medical scanners and machine tools. Three-row roller bearings handle the heaviest loads in large cranes and excavators. SKF’s selection process evaluates the load moment spectra to define the optimal raceway.
