SNL 2, 3, 5 and 6 Series Housings

The SKF SNL 2, 3, 5, and 6 series are the classic split plummer block housings, recognized worldwide as the standard solution for mounting self-aligning ball bearings, spherical roller bearings, CARB bearings, and adaptor-sleeve-mounted bearings. The numeric designation (2, 3, 5, 6) corresponds to the housing’s strength and size relative to the bearing series it accommodates. Manufactured from high-grade grey cast iron, they provide excellent vibration damping and robust support for radial loads. The two-piece split design simplifies assembly around the shaft without removing couplings. They are pre-machined for standard seals and lubricant fittings, offering a reliable, cost-effective bearing arrangement. Typical applications span industrial fans, conveyors, pumps, and gearboxes. Their long-standing interchangeability ensures spares are readily available, minimising downtime. SKF’s SNL 2–6 series remains the first choice for maintenance-friendly, dependable shaft support.

Industry-Standard Footprint

Interchangeable with similar housings, avoiding frame modifications.

Two-Piece Split Design

Cap and base separate for easy bearing inspection and replacement.

Seal Versatility

Accommodates V-ring, labyrinth, and lip seals for varied environments.

Sturdy Grey Cast Iron

Excellent vibration absorption and structural integrity.

Integrated Grease Paths

Simplifies relubrication with standard nipples.

Locating Ring Grooves

Allows bearing to function as locating or non-locating with fixed rings.

Selecting the Right SNL Series for Your Load

The choice between SNL 2 (light) and SNL 6 (very heavy) depends on the bearing’s dynamic load rating and the static housing strength required. SKF provides a straightforward selection table based on bearing number, ensuring the housing safely supports the maximum expected load without fatigue or fracture.

Maintenance Benefits of Split Housings

When a bearing fails on a fan shaft between bearings, an unsplit housing requires dismantling the coupling and motor. The SNL split housing allows lifting the cap, removing the worn bearing, and reassembling a new one around the shaft, saving hours and labour costs.
