SONL Series Housings
The SONL series from SKF is a split plummer block housing specifically engineered for oil lubrication of spherical roller bearings and CARB bearings. It integrates a large oil reservoir, an oil sight glass, and a magnetic drain plug as standard. The housing is designed with an internal oil collector groove that channels oil to the bearing, and it can be fitted with a slinger or pick-up ring for reliable oil feed at start-up and varying speeds. SONL housings are robust, ribbed grey cast iron castings intended for applications where oil lubrication is necessary to remove heat or provide the correct viscosity for high-speed or high-temperature operation. They are typical in paper machine dryer sections, large industrial fans, and generator bearings. The SONL series simplifies oil system design by incorporating these features into a standardised, globally available housing.

Why Choose Oil Lubrication with SONL Housings?
When bearing speed factor (n·dm) or operating temperature exceeds grease limits, oil lubrication becomes essential. The SONL housing provides a self-contained oil bath that cools the bearing and continuously supplies fresh lubricant. It’s an ideal solution for upgrading problematic grease-lubricated bearings that run hot.

Applications in Paper Machine Dryer Sections
Paper dryers run at high temperature and require bearings that can cope with thermal expansion and high speeds. SONL housings with circulating oil and CARB bearings accommodate shaft expansion and maintain a stable temperature, preventing unscheduled stops that cost millions in lost production.
