Spherical Plain Bearings & Rod Ends

SKF spherical plain bearings and rod ends are specialized plain bearing products designed for articulation joints that must accommodate angular misalignment, oscillating movements, and heavy loads in all directions. Spherical plain bearings feature an inner ring with a sphered outer surface that mates with a corresponding sphered bore in the outer ring, enabling multi-directional angular rotation. These bearings are available in radial (accommodating radial and combined loads), angular contact (for combined loads with a predominant axial component), and thrust (for pure axial loads) configurations. Rod ends integrate a spherical plain bearing within an eye-shaped head that includes a threaded shank (male or female), providing a ready-to-install linkage component for connecting hydraulic cylinders, pneumatic actuators, control rods, and steering linkages. Sliding contact surface combinations include steel/steel (requiring maintenance), steel/bronze (requiring maintenance), and maintenance-free options using PTFE fabric or PTFE sintered bronze materials. For design engineers and maintenance teams in construction, agriculture, marine, aerospace, and industrial automation, SKF spherical plain bearings and rod ends deliver the reliability and durability essential for critical articulation joints.

Multi-Directional Angular Movement Capability

The spherical sliding contact surface permits rotation, tilting, and misalignment in all directions, simplifying the design of articulated linkages and compensating for structural deflections.

Maintenance-Free PTFE Fabric & Sintered Bronze Bearings

SKF spherical plain bearings with steel/PTFE fabric or steel/PTFE sintered bronze sliding surfaces are self-lubricating, eliminating periodic greasing and reducing environmental impact.

Rod Ends with Standardized Thread Forms

SKF rod ends are available with male or female right-hand threads (left-hand threads available for selected sizes), enabling direct attachment to hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder piston rods.

Heavy-Duty Triple-Lip Seals on Extended Life Bearings

SKF Extended Life steel/steel spherical plain bearings incorporate robust sealing that virtually eliminates contaminant ingress, dramatically extending bearing life in dirty environments.

Welding Shank Rod Ends for Custom Fabrications

SC series rod ends feature a cylindrical welding shank that can be welded directly into structural fabrications, providing maximum design flexibility for custom linkages.

SKF Explorer Performance Class Available

Select spherical plain bearings in SKF Explorer class deliver improved corrosion resistance, enhanced sealing, and optimized internal geometry for superior field performance.

Sliding Contact Surface Combinations: Selection Guide

The choice of sliding contact surface combination determines the spherical plain bearing's maintenance requirements, load capacity, and suitability for specific operating conditions. Steel/steel bearings (designation suffix ES) require regular relubrication to maintain a protective lubricant film between the sliding surfaces. They offer the highest dynamic load ratings and are ideal for applications with heavy alternating or impact loads where regular maintenance is feasible. Steel/PTFE fabric bearings (designation suffix TX) are maintenance-free, self-lubricating, and provide consistent low friction throughout their service life — ideal for applications with limited maintenance access. Steel/PTFE sintered bronze bearings (designation suffix C) are also maintenance-free with excellent load capacity and are particularly suitable for applications involving frequent small oscillating movements that might challenge fabric liners. Steel/bronze bearings (designation suffix M) offer an intermediate option requiring maintenance but providing good performance at lower cost than steel/steel in light to moderate load applications.

Applications Across Mobile and Industrial Equipment

SKF spherical plain bearings and rod ends are critical components in equipment where movement and articulation are essential. Construction machinery — excavators, wheel loaders, bulldozers, graders — uses spherical plain bearings in boom, arm, and bucket linkages that articulate thousands of times per day under extreme loads and contamination. Agricultural equipment such as tractors, combines, and balers relies on rod ends for three-point hitch linkages, steering cylinders, and implement control mechanisms. Marine applications include rudder linkages, steering gear, and propeller pitch control systems that must resist corrosion while handling heavy loads. Aerospace flight control linkages, landing gear articulation, and engine mounting systems use high-specification SKF spherical plain bearings engineered for maximum reliability with minimal weight.
