Water Pump Bearing Seals

SKF water pump bearing seals are highly specialised lip seals designed to operate directly in engine coolant (typically a water-glycol mixture) at temperatures up to 130°C and shaft speeds matching engine RPM. The seal must prevent coolant leakage along the pump shaft into the bearing, while excluding dirt and maintaining its flexibility in hot coolant. SKF uses advanced elastomers such as FKM or EPDM, sometimes in a PTFE-faced lip configuration to handle the fluid and thermal demands. The seal is often designed with a secondary dust lip and is integrated into a cartridge along with the water pump bearing. Reliable sealing is essential to prevent coolant loss (leading to engine overheating) and to protect the bearing from water-induced corrosion and washout of grease, which causes pump seizure. SKF supplies these seals to water pump manufacturers with life validation exceeding typical vehicle durability requirements.

Coolant‑Compatible Lip Materials

EPDM or FKM resist water‑glycol and corrosion inhibitors.

Spring‑Loaded Lip

Maintains contact at high pump RPM.

Secondary Dust Lip

Protects primary lip from belt dust and external debris.

Integrated into Bearing Unit

Seal is part of a pre‑greased, ready‑to‑press cartridge.

Thermal Stability

Withstands engine bay temperatures from ‑40°C to over 130°C.

Pump Life Extension

Effective sealing prevents bearing washout and pump seizure.

The Chemistry of Coolant Compatibility

Modern long‑life coolants contain organic acid technology (OAT) inhibitors that can attack standard NBR seals, causing softening and leakage. SKF water pump seals use EPDM, which is chemically inert to these inhibitors, ensuring a tight seal for the entire coolant change interval.

How to Diagnose a Water Pump Seal Leak

Coolant dripping from the pump weep hole indicates that the internal seal has failed. If ignored, the coolant dilutes the bearing grease, leading to noisy pump bearing and eventual pump seizure. SKF’s water pump kits allow a complete, one‑step replacement of the bearing‑seal‑impeller assembly, restoring the pump to original performance.
