Wiper Seals
SKF wiper seals (also called scraper seals) are mounted at the outer face of the hydraulic cylinder head. Their primary function is to clean the reciprocating rod, removing dust, dirt, mud, ice, and moisture before it contacts the rod seal. This prevents contaminant ingress and scoring of the rod and seal, dramatically extending the life of the entire sealing system. Wiper seals are made from wear-resistant polyurethane or filled PTFE, with profiles that provide a sharp scraping edge and a secondary dust lip. In extreme environments — mining, construction, agriculture — a robust wiper is essential for cylinder survival. SKF offers snap-in and metal-cased wipers in metric and inch sizes, with special designs for ice scraping, high temperature, and aggressive chemical exposure.

Contaminant Exclusion
Scrapes off bonded dirt, ice, and dried mud.
Extends Rod Seal Life
Protects the primary seal from abrasive wear.
Robust Polyurethane Profiles
Resist wear, tear, and chemical attack.
Snap-In and Metal Case Options
Easy installation and secure retention.
Flexible Secondary Lip
Conforms to rod, sealing residual oil film.
Specialty Designs
Ice scraper profiles, high temperature, and metal-encased for heavy impacts.
Selecting a Wiper for Extremely Dirty Conditions
Mining roof supports and excavator cylinders face relentless rock dust and slurry. SKF’s double-lip polyurethane wipers with a metal reinforcing band provide the aggressive scraping and structural integrity needed. The wiper can be replaced independently during routine maintenance without disassembling the cylinder, preserving the rod seal.

Wiper and Rod Seal Compatibility
The wiper must not interfere with the rod seal's ability to maintain a thin oil film. SKF designs its wiper and rod seal combinations to work together, with the wiper leaving a controlled amount of clean fluid on the rod for the rod seal to manage, ensuring both protection and lubrication.
