Tyrolit Cup Wheels | Angle Grinder Grinding Wheels for Steel, Stone & Ductile Iron
Tyrolit Cup Wheels are robust, depressed-center or straight-cup abrasive wheels designed for heavy-duty angle grinder applications where maximum stock removal, edge grinding, and surface levelling are required. They are a distinct category from cutting wheels, characterized by their thick, reinforced profile and wide abrasive face that makes full contact with the workpiece. Tyrolit cup wheels are manufactured in several abrasive types: aluminium oxide for general steel, zirconia for tough alloys and stainless steel, and silicon carbide for stone, concrete, and non-ferrous metals. The wheels feature heavy glass fibre reinforcement webbing, compliant with oSa® safety standards, giving operators the confidence to apply substantial pressure during freehand grinding. The depressed-center shape (Type 11) allows flush grinding of surfaces, while straight cup wheels (Type 6) are used for sharp edge grinding and bevelling. In foundries, cup wheels excel at snagging gates and risers from large castings; in construction, they level concrete edges and remove formwork seams; in metal fabrication, they grind down heavy welds rapidly. Tyrolit’s proprietary bond formulations ensure a cool, clean cut and resist the loading that occurs with softer materials. The cup wheel category is a workhorse in the grinding portfolio, trusted for its unmatched metal removal rate and enduring structural integrity.

Massive Stock Removal Capacity
Wide, flat-grinding face combined with aggressive grain (ceramic or zirconia) removes metal up to twice as fast as standard depressed-center grinding wheels on heavy sections.
Reinforced for High-Side Load Safety
Multiple fiberglass webbing layers prevent wheel fracture when the cup wheel is tilted against an edge or corner, essential for freehand grinding in foundry and fabrication environments.
Depressed-Center Design for Flush Grinding
The recessed hub allows the wheel to grind flat surfaces right up to an edge without the arbor nut interfering with the workpiece.
Material-Specific Bond Formulations
Special bonds for steel (self-sharpening), stainless steel (low-heat, contamination-free), and ductile iron/castings (open structure to resist loading) optimize wheel life.
Ergonomic Vibration Dampening
Precision balancing minimizes transmitted vibration to the operator, reducing fatigue and improving control during long, continuous grinding operations.
Universal Angle Grinder Fitments
Available in standard 22.23mm and 25.4mm arbor bores with included reducing bushes for compatibility across all major grinder brands.
Why Tyrolit Cup Wheels Are Essential for Heavy Metal Removal
Where a standard grinding disc applies concentrated pressure on a thin edge, a cup wheel spreads the grinding force across its entire face. This makes it far more efficient at levelling uneven surfaces, blending large weld caps, and removing scale from steel plate. In foundries, cup wheels are irreplaceable for removing riser remnants on large castings where a standard disc would take too long and generate excessive heat. Tyrolit’s cup wheel range is continuously refined; the ceramic grain options demonstrate extreme self-sharpening properties that prevent the wheel surface from becoming dull and glossy after initial use. This ensures that the cup wheel cuts as aggressively on its last day as it did on its first, providing consistent grinding times for piecework-based operators. The robust safety construction means the wheel can survive accidental knocks against the workpiece that would shatter a thinner grinding wheel, a common occurrence in heavy industrial environments.

Selecting Between Depressed-Center and Straight Cup Wheels
Type 11 (flared cup) wheels are the most common, used on standard and large right-angle grinders. Type 6 (straight cup) wheels are typically cylindrical and used on vertical grinders or for edge grinding where a square profile is needed. Grit choice: 24–36 grit for rapid stock removal, 46–60 for blending and moderate removal. Diamond cup wheels are a separate category under diamond tools; these Tyrolit cup wheels are bonded abrasive products for metals and stone. The operator should match the cup wheel diameter to the grinder—up to 180mm on large angle grinders—and ensure the rated RPM exceeds the grinder’s no-load speed.
