Tyrolit Cut-Off Grinding Wheels | Precision Parting & Slot Grinding for Metal Separating
Tyrolit Cut-Off Grinding wheels are thin, reinforced, resin-bonded abrasive discs specifically engineered for precision parting, slotting, and cut-off operations on CNC and manual grinding machines. This category should not be confused with larger "cutting tools" for hand-held machines; these are precision grinding wheels typically 75 mm to 300 mm in diameter, with thicknesses as low as 0.5 mm, used in ultra-accurate, high-speed separating of hardened tool steel, carbide, ceramics, and electronic components. The wheels are manufactured with strong grain retention, utilizing premium aluminium oxide and silicon carbide, with extremely high concentrations of diamond and CBN in superabrasive variants for the hardest materials. Tyrolit’s thin cut-off grinding wheels exhibit outstanding lateral stiffness and form-holding capability, critical for producing narrow kerfs and clean, burr-free cut edges. They are used extensively in the production of cutting tool inserts, cutting of hardened shafts, and sectioning of metallurgical samples. The precision balancing and uniform thickness control of Tyrolit wheels eliminate the vibration that causes chipping and poor cut quality. Additionally, Tyrolit offers reinforced and ultra-thin resin bond diamond wheels for high-speed cutting of sintered carbide, ceramic, quartz, and other brittle industrial materials where wire EDM is too slow or expensive.

Ultra-Thin Kerf for Minimal Material Loss
Wheels down to 0.5 mm thickness minimize material waste, reduce grinding power consumption, and produce exceptionally clean, narrow cuts on expensive alloys and semiconductors.
High Lateral Stiffness for Straight Cuts
Specialized resin bonds and reinforcement fabrics ensure the wheel does not deflect during deep slotting, maintaining kerf width and perpendicularity over the entire cut depth.
Diamond and CBN Superabrasive Options
For hardened steel, carbide, and ceramic part cut-off, Tyrolit CBN and diamond wheels provide superior edge retention and life, reducing wheel change frequency and cost per cut.
Optimized for Wet and Dry Precision Cutting
Formulations exist for cool, lubricated cutting to prevent thermal cracking, and dry-cutting for applications where coolant could contaminate sensitive electronic or optical parts.
Consistent Wheel Life Predictability
Tight control over abrasive concentration and bond hardness ensures that each wheel performs identically, enabling CNC programs with automatic tool-life management to run lights-out.
Burr-Free, High-Quality Cut Surface
The fine grit and precise bond yield a cut surface that often requires no further finishing, eliminating secondary deburring operations and improving workflow integration.
Why Tyrolit Precision Cut-Off Wheels Are Chosen for Critical Separating Operations
In the manufacturing of ceramic substrates, carbide tooling, or hardened bearing steel, the cut-off operation often determines the yield and final part quality. A substandard wheel will cause edge chipping, micro-cracking, or burr formation, leading to costly inspection rejects. Tyrolit’s ultra-fine diamond cut-off wheels utilize precisely graded diamond particles and a bond structure that erodes at an exact rate matching diamond loss, ensuring the wheel remains sharp and dimensionally stable throughout its life. In semiconductor wafer dicing and electronic ceramics, Tyrolit wheels achieve kerf widths and surface qualities that rival laser cutting, but at a fraction of the capital cost, using standard CNC grinding equipment. These wheels are manufactured under clean-room conditions for contamination-sensitive applications. Application engineers assist in selecting the optimal wheel geometry, grain, and bond for each unique material, including specialized advice on machine speed, feed rate, and coolant type.

Selecting the Correct Cut-Off Wheel for Precision Slot and Parting Operations
Selection criteria include workpiece material, cut depth, and required surface finish. For hardened tool steel (>60 HRC), a CBN resin bond wheel, 1.0 mm thick, is the first choice for speed and life. For carbide rod cutting, a high-concentration diamond wheel with a metal bond or brittle resin bond for self-sharpening is recommended. For sectioning metallurgical samples, a consumable AlOx wheel is used to avoid contamination. Tyrolit also offers custom wheel sizes with specific arbor hole tolerances to fit any spindle. The technical data sheets provide maximum RPM, recommended infeed rates, and suitable coolants, enabling manufacturing engineers to implement the wheel with minimal trial runs.
