Tyrolit Flap Discs | High-Performance Abrasive Flap Discs for Metal Finishing
Tyrolit Flap Discs are multi-layered coated abrasive tools consisting of overlapping abrasive flaps that radiate from a central hub, designed for one-step grinding and finishing on angle grinders. They provide a unique combination of aggressive stock removal, smooth blending, and long, consistent life. Tyrolit flap discs are manufactured with premium ceramic (CERABOND X), zirconia, and aluminium oxide cloth, bonded into a dense, progressively-wearing matrix. Unlike fibre discs that require a separate backing pad, and grinding wheels that can leave a rough finish, flap discs bridge the gap: they remove material like a grinding wheel, yet produce a finish approaching that of a fine fibre disc. The self-sharpening action of the flaps exposes fresh grain continuously, maintaining a constant cut rate and finish until the disc is fully consumed. Tyrolit flap discs are available in flat (Type 27) and conical (Type 29) shapes, catering to either smooth surface blending or aggressive angled heavy grinding. They are the preferred tool for weld seam blending, edge deburring, rust removal, and surface conditioning across mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium. Tyrolit’s premium ceramic flap discs deliver up to 40% longer life and faster cut rates than standard zirconia, dramatically reducing overall abrasive consumption and labor time.

One-Step Grind and Finish
Tyrolit flap discs remove weld metal quickly and simultaneously leave a paintable, smooth finish, eliminating the need to switch between a grinding wheel and a finishing disc.
Self-Sharpening Flap Action
As layers of abrasive cloth wear down, fresh, sharp grain is constantly exposed, maintaining 100% of the initial cutting speed from start to stub.
CERABOND X Ceramic Performance
Exclusive ceramic grain structure microfractures to stay sharp, removing more metal per disc and generating less heat and blueing on sensitive stainless steel welds.
Type 27 (Flat) and Type 29 (Conical) Geometries
Type 29 conical flaps provide maximum aggression for heavy grinding at an angle; Type 27 flat flaps offer superior control for finishing and blending on flat surfaces.
Consistent, Wobble-Free Grinding
The rigid layered construction is denser than cheaper discs, resisting the “disc wobble” that causes vibration, uneven finishes, and operator fatigue.
Contamination-Safe for Stainless Steel
Tyrolit flap discs intended for stainless are manufactured without iron, sulfur, or chlorine, preventing the surface corrosion and pitting that other discs can cause.
Why Tyrolit Ceramic Flap Discs Outperform Standard Flap Discs in the Weld Shop
Standard flap disc economics often look good on a per-disc price, but the consumable cost pales in comparison to labor cost. A welder spending 20 minutes grinding and finishing a joint is far more expensive than the disc. Tyrolit’s CERABOND X ceramic flap discs address this by allowing the welder to apply more pressure and move faster without glazing the disc. The faster metal removal means the operator finishes the joint sooner, moving on to the next task. Additionally, the consistent finish eliminates the need to go back with a hand pad to remove swirl marks. For a shop employing ten welders, saving just 5 minutes per joint translates to enormous annual labor savings. The extended disc life also means fewer trips to the tool crib, less downtime, and less waste—all factors that make the higher-priced Tyrolit ceramic disc the most cost-effective choice.

Choosing Between Type 27 and Type 29 Flap Discs
The selection is simple: Type 29 conical flap discs present the abrasive flaps at a 10–15 degree angle, ideal for heavy stock removal on edges, bevels, and open flat surfaces where maximum aggression is needed. Type 27 flat flap discs are the versatile, all-rounder choice for grinding and finishing on flat, contoured, and vertical surfaces with excellent operator control. Grit selection follows: 40 grit for heavy weld removal, 60 grit for general grinding and blending, 80 grit for finishing and paint prep, 120 grit for fine surface conditioning. Tyrolit can supply assortment packs to help new users find their optimal combination.
