Tyrolit Fleece Pins & Flap Pins | Conformable Finishing Tools for Contours & Profiles

Tyrolit Fleece Pins and Flap Pins are compact, cylindrical or shaped finishing tools designed for blending, cleaning, and polishing contoured surfaces, fillets, and hard-to-reach areas that larger wheels cannot access. Fleece pins, constructed from layered or convolute-wound non-woven abrasive material, offer a soft, conformable finishing action ideal for creating uniform satin finishes on complex geometries without altering part dimensions. Flap pins, built from multiple coated abrasive flaps arranged radially around a small-diameter spindle, provide a more aggressive cutting action while still maintaining flexibility and conformability. Both product types are manufactured with high-quality Tyrolit abrasive grains—aluminium oxide for general purpose, silicon carbide for non-ferrous and hard materials—bonded to durable fiber backings that resist tearing and loading. Available in standard shank diameters (3 mm, 6 mm) for direct mounting in straight grinders, flexible shafts, and micromotor tools, these pins are essential for mold and die polishing, deburring machined internal passages, blending intricate weldments, and surface conditioning of small metal and plastic components. Their value lies in their ability to reach into recesses, holes, and concave profiles while producing a consistent, controllable surface finish without the risk of gouging or edge rounding that rigid tools present.

Precision Access to Confined Areas

Small diameters and cylindrical/tapered shapes fit into bores, slots, channels, and internal pockets that larger abrasive tools cannot reach, enabling complete finishing of complex parts in a single setup.

Contour-Following Flexibility

The inherent conformability of fleece and flap constructions allows the tool to wrap around fillets, radii, and irregular profiles, producing a uniform scratch pattern without flat spots or dimensional loss.

Controlled Aggression for Fine Finishing

Fleece pins deliver a soft, non-directional satin finish; flap pins provide moderate stock removal for blending and deburring—giving operators precise control over the final surface texture and material removal rate.

Loading-Resistant Open Structure

The three-dimensional web of fleece pins and the space between flap pin flaps prevent the debris build-up that causes conventional small abrasives to stop cutting, maintaining consistent performance over the tool’s life.

Self-Sharpening Abrasive Action

As fibers and flaps wear, fresh grain is continuously exposed, ensuring that cutting speed and finish quality remain constant until the pin is fully consumed.

Multi-Material Compatibility

Tyrolit fleece and flap pins are available in formulations safe for steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, plastics, and composites, with contaminant-free options for corrosion-resistant alloys.

Why Tyrolit Fleece and Flap Pins Are Essential for Toolroom and Precision Metal Finishing

Precision engineering and toolmaking demand absolute control over surface finish without compromising part geometry. Tyrolit fleece and flap pins provide this control by combining flexibility with carefully graded abrasive grain. The fleece pin’s non-woven structure acts like a resilient brush, removing micro-burrs and blending surface tool marks without creating directional scratches that can initiate stress corrosion or detract from part aesthetics. Flap pins, with their multiple abrasive flaps, offer a step-change in aggression for applications requiring moderate stock removal—such as smoothing EDM recast layers or blending step mismatches in machined profiles—while still following part contours faithfully. Both tool types are contamination-free: critical when finishing medical implants, aerospace structural parts, and food processing components where ferrous contamination cannot be tolerated. Tyrolit’s rigorous quality control ensures consistent grain dispersion and bond strength, giving toolroom managers predictable finishing times and reliable surface finish outcomes batch after batch.

Selecting the Right Pin for Your Finishing Task: Fleece vs. Flap

The choice between fleece and flap pins depends on the starting surface condition and the desired finish. Fleece pins are recommended for final cosmetic finishing, light cleaning, and satin finish application on surfaces that are already smooth. They excel on contoured surfaces where maintaining dimensional integrity is paramount. Flap pins are preferred when some material removal is necessary—blending weld seams in small bore intersections, deburring cross-drilled holes, or smoothing rough EDM finishes. Grit selection follows standard abrasive logic: coarse grits (60–80) for stock removal, medium (100–180) for blending, fine (220–400) for finishing. Tyrolit also offers abrasive types matched to the workpiece: silicon carbide for titanium and non-ferrous materials, aluminium oxide for steel and iron. The universal 3 mm and 6 mm shanks ensure compatibility with all standard finishing motors.
