Tyrolit Grinding Wheels | Vitrified & Resinoid Bench & Pedestal Wheels for Metal

Tyrolit Grinding Wheels are the foundational product of the company, representing a century of expertise in bonded abrasive engineering for bench, pedestal, and stationary grinding machines. This category encompasses both vitrified and resinoid-bonded wheels in a comprehensive range of sizes, shapes, grits, and hardness grades for grinding metals, high-alloy steels, cast iron, non-ferrous materials, and tool steels. The wheels are manufactured using premium fused aluminium oxide, ceramic grain, silicon carbide, and combinations thereof, bonded under intense heat and pressure to create a precisely calibrated grinding tool. Vitrified wheels, with their porous, strong structure, are ideal for precision grinding, tool sharpening, and surface grinding where cool cutting and form-holding are critical. Resinoid wheels, more elastic and impact-resistant, excel in rough grinding, snagging, and heavy stock removal. Tyrolit grinding wheels are used in every grinding mode: cylindrical, centreless, surface, and freehand off-hand grinding. The company’s expertise lies in matching the “hardness grade” and structure to the application; for example, a soft grade wheel for hard steel prevents glazing, while a hard grade wheel for soft materials minimizes wear. Every Tyrolit grinding wheel is individually speed-tested and complies with oSa® and ISO standards, ensuring maximum protection for operators on factory floors and in small workshops globally.

Precise Grade and Structure Engineering

Tyrolit wheels are offered in a full range of hardness grades (E to Z) and structures (open to dense), custom-matched to the material hardness and material removal rate, completely eliminating guesswork.

Vitrified Bond for Precision and Cool Cut

Tyrolit’s advanced vitrified bonds hold their form perfectly, enabling tight-tolerance grinding and effective coolant absorption, preventing heat damage to metallurgy.

Resinoid Wheels for Foundry Snagging and Safety

Elastic resinoid bonds absorb impact and vibration on heavy-duty pedestal and swing-frame grinders, offering a wider safety margin during aggressive, high-pressure operations.

Ceramic and Semi-Friable Grain Options

Premium grain versions provide self-sharpening action and minimize dressing cycle frequency, maximizing machine uptime and operator output in production environments.

Global Stock and Custom Manufacture

Standard wheels are available from stock in all major markets; special dimensions, profiles, and arbor sizes can be manufactured on demand for specialized grinding tasks.

Individual Wheel Speed Testing

Each wheel leaving a Tyrolit production facility is individually tested at 1.5x maximum operating speed, documented and marked, in accordance with oSa® safety certification.

Why Tyrolit Grinding Wheels Are the Industry Standard for Over 100 Years

Tyrolit’s competitive advantage lies in the control of the entire manufacturing chain: from the selection of raw abrasive grains, to the engineering of bonding clays and resins, to the individual testing of each wheel. This vertical integration ensures that a 300 mm Type 1 wheel produced in Europe behaves identically to one produced in Asia or the Americas, a critical factor for multinational manufacturers with global supply agreements. The company’s innovation in ceramic grains, such as the GENIS 2 bonded system for precision grinding, reduces grinding forces, allowing higher feed rates without burning the workpiece. In high-precision industries like aerospace and automotive, where scrap parts can cost thousands of dollars, the reliability of Tyrolit wheels reduces process variance and protects against catastrophic wheel failure.

Understanding Grinding Wheel Specifications and Selection

A grinding wheel specification is a code of abrasive type, grit size, grade, structure, and bond type. Tyrolit provides application engineers and comprehensive selection catalogs. The rule of thumb: hard workpiece (high-carbon steel, carbide) requires a soft grade wheel so dull grains detach and expose new sharp ones; soft workpiece (aluminium, brass) requires a hard grade wheel to avoid rapid wheel wear. Vitrified wheels are used where dressing with a diamond tool is possible and a free-cutting face is needed. Resinoid wheels are used where impact and flexing are expected. Tyrolit’s website and technical support can translate a user’s machine parameters and material into the perfect wheel code.
