Tyrolit Internal Cylindrical Grinding Wheels | ID Grinding Wheels for Precision Bores

Tyrolit Internal Cylindrical Grinding Wheels are specialized small-diameter vitrified, resinoid, and superabrasive wheels designed for precision grinding of bores, tapers, and internal profiles on components such as bearings, gears, hydraulic cylinders, and fuel injection nozzles. In ID grinding, the wheel diameter is typically limited to 60–80% of the bore diameter, requiring it to operate at extremely high rotational speeds (often exceeding 50,000 RPM) on long, slender spindles that are susceptible to deflection and vibration. Tyrolit internal grinding wheels are engineered to provide maximum stiffness, exceptional balance, and ultra-fine surface finishes under these demanding conditions. The portfolio includes ceramic vitrified wheels for high-speed steel grinding, CBN wheels on robust steel arbors for hardened high-alloy steels, and diamond wheels for carbide and ceramic bores. Genis 2 porous ceramic bonds reduce grinding forces by delivering coolant directly to the grinding contact, preventing the “spindle spring” effect that causes bell-mouthing and taper errors. Tyrolit wheels are a staple in the production of high-precision components for the bearing, diesel, and hydraulic industries, where ID concentricity to the OD and surface finish quality are the defining part acceptance criteria.

Arbor-Mounted Superabrasive Wheels for Rigidity

CBN and diamond ID wheels are manufactured on precision-ground steel or carbide arbors, maximizing spindle stiffness and eliminating the deflection that causes bore geometry errors.

Ultra-Fine Grits for Mirror Bore Finishes

Available in grits up to 1200 and beyond, Tyrolit ID wheels can generate the sub-Ra 0.05 µm finishes required for diesel injector nozzle bores and hydraulic servo valves.

GENIS 2 Porous Structure for Cool, Low-Force Grinding

Vitrified wheels with high porosity reduce the grinding forces on long quill spindles, preventing chatter and enabling accurate bore size control.

Tight Bore Entry With Minimal Wheel Wear

Tyrolit specifies bonds that resist entry rounding, ensuring the bore remains dimensionally accurate from the entry to the bottom of a blind hole.

Wide Range of Shapes and Profiles

Straight wheels, taper cups, and profile wheels are available to grind internal shoulders, seal grooves, and ball tracks in one plunge operation, reducing cycle time.

Process Support for Vibration-Prone Setups

Tyrolit application engineers advise on wheel speed, dress lead, and quill design to suppress the resonant vibrations that cause spiral chatter marks.

Why Tyrolit ID Grinding Wheels Overcome the Challenges of High L/D Ratio Bores

Deep bores (e.g., hydraulic cylinder tubes, landing gear struts) present an extreme grinding challenge: the wheel must be mounted on a long, slender quill that vibrates easily. Tyrolit addresses this with extremely hard, sharp grains in a soft bond that cut freely at low force. The GENIS 2 ultra-porous vitrified wheels are particularly effective because the coolant flows through the wheel structure and out the grinding face, acting like a lubricated cutting tool rather than a rubbing stone. This prevents the catastrophic “burn rings” that scrap high-value parts. For through-bore grinding of bearing inner rings, Tyrolit CBN wheels with multiple arbor diameters are designed to maintain consistent cutting speed as the wheel traverses, holding bore size within microns across the full length.

Wheel Selection for Production ID Grinding

Selection parameters: bore diameter, length, material, machine spindle power, and required surface finish. For steel bearings, vitrified ceramic is the cost-effective standard. For hardened or high-chrome steel, vitrified CBN wheels provide a step-change in wheel life and size holding. For carbide and ceramic seals, diamond wheels are essential. Tyrolit provides a "grinding assessment" where they measure current cycle times and reject rates, then propose a wheel specification optimised for the entire system (wheel, quill, dressing method, coolant).
