Tyrolit Rough Cleaning Discs | Abrasive Non-Woven Stripping & Paint Removal Discs
Tyrolit Rough Cleaning Discs are specialised, open-structured, non-woven abrasive discs that are heavily impregnated with silicon carbide or aluminium oxide grain, designed for the aggressive removal of paint, varnish, rust, corrosion, adhesives, and surface contaminants from metal, wood, and composites—without the deep scratching or gouging caused by grinding discs or wire brushes. The open, fibrous web resists loading and performs cool, meaning coatings are stripped away rather than melted or smeared. Tyrolit cleaning discs are available in arbor mount, quick-change, and hook-and-loop formats for use on angle grinders, random orbital sanders, and bench machines. The discs are offered in very coarse to fine grit equivalents, with coarse grades rapidly stripping multiple layers of old paint from machinery or boat hulls, and fine grades leaving a smooth, paintable finish. They are indispensable in automotive restoration, marine maintenance, industrial machinery repainting, and building renovation. The non-woven design means the disc conforms slightly to shapes and profiles, preventing the flat-spotting and edge gouging common with rigid abrasive discs. Tyrolit cleaning discs are a cornerstone of the “surface conditioning” and “rough cleaning” workflow, bridging the gap between heavy stock removal and final finishing.

Loading-Free Open Web Structure
The fibrous, three-dimensional web prevents paint and corrosion debris from clogging the disc, maintaining a constant cut rate across the entire life of the disc and eliminating time wasted cleaning the abrasive.
Heat-Sensitive Stripping Action
The resilient, non-woven construction generates minimal heat compared to fibre discs, preventing the warping of thin metal panels and the melting of paint into a sticky glaze.
Conformable for Profiles and Contours
The disc flexes to follow gentle curves, bead rolls, and raised panel profiles, removing coatings evenly without thinning edges or flattening surface features.
Grain-Impregnated Throughout
Unlike sandpaper that dies when its surface grain dulls, Tyrolit cleaning discs have grit distributed through the whole web, continually exposing fresh abrasive and lasting multiples longer.
Surface-Ready Finish from a Single Disc
Coarse grades strip and leave a clean, slightly textured surface perfect for paint adhesion, while fine grades create a smooth satin polish—often eliminating secondary sanding steps.
Quick-Change and Hook-and-Loop Mounting
Available in TS/TR quick-change bayonet mounts for angle grinders and Velcro loops for orbital sanders, enabling fast disc swaps in busy production and bodyshop environments.
Why Tyrolit Cleaning Discs Are Replacing Sanding Discs for Paint and Coating Removal
Sanding discs, while effective for stock removal on wood or metal, fail rapidly when used on paint, varnish, or body filler. The friction melts the resin, loading the sandpaper in seconds. Tyrolit cleaning discs avoid this completely. The open web acts like a series of tiny scrapers, pulling the coating material away without friction-heating it. For automotive restoration shops, this means a single operator with a Tyrolit coarse cleaning disc can strip an entire car door of multiple paint layers in minutes without damaging the steel underneath by heat-induced warping. The increased longevity per disc—often outlasting a dozen sanding discs—dramatically reduces the shop’s consumable spend and the operator’s downtime changing paper.

Grit Selection and Machine Compatibility
Tyrolit classifies cleaning discs by colour-coded coarseness: dark brown/black for very coarse (aggressive stripping), maroon for medium (general paint and rust removal), blue for fine (surface blending and finishing). Coarse discs are used on angle grinders at lower RPM or on variable-speed polishers. Medium and fine discs are ideal for random orbital sanders for a swirl-free finish. The quick-change (TR) mounting is standard for all modern air and electric right-angle grinders. Tyrolit’s website provides a clear substitution table, showing which cleaning disc replaces which grit of sandpaper for specific paint-removal tasks.
