Tyrolit Saw Sharpening Wheels | Precision Abrasives for Carbide & HSS Saw Blades

Tyrolit Saw Sharpening Wheels are specialized vitrified, resinoid, and diamond/CBN abrasive wheels specifically designed for the face, top, and side grinding of carbide-tipped and high-speed steel saw blades, as well as band saw blades, circular knives, and planer knives. Sharpening a cutting tool is a precision grinding operation: it must restore the cutting edge to factory sharpness without burning the tooth tip, causing microcracks, or altering the hook angle. Tyrolit’s saw sharpening wheels fulfill this using carefully selected abrasive grains and bonds. For carbide saw tips, resin-bonded and vitrified diamond wheels (often Type 1A1 or 12A2) provide the necessary free-cutting cool grind that preserves the carbide’s integral strength. For HSS saw blades, ceramic and CBN wheels deliver fast stock removal with minimal heat. Tyrolit’s cup wheels (Type 6A2, 11V9) are standard for face and top grinding on automatic Vollmer, Walter, and AKE sharpening machines, while straight wheels are used for deep side-grinding of band saw teeth. The wheels are manufactured with precise radii and profiles to generate the complex gullet forms and chip breakers required on modern saw blades. The result is a saw that cuts as efficiently as new, with extended blade life between sharpenings and reduced motor load on the saw machine.

Burn-Free Carbide Grinding

Tyrolit diamond wheels utilize sharp, friable diamond in a soft resin bond, grinding carbide tips cool and preventing the thermal cracking that leads to premature tip failure.

Profile Wheels for Gullet and Chip Breaker Forms

Custom-shaped wheels reproduce the complex contours of modern saw tooth geometry in a single pass, eliminating secondary profiling operations.

Compatibility with Vollmer, Walter, and AKE Machines

Tyrolit wheels are manufactured with standard bore sizes and geometries (e.g., 11V9 cup wheels) that mount directly onto all leading automatic saw grinders.

High CBN Stock Removal for HSS Blades

Ceramic or CBN wheels grind high-speed steel and bi-metal band saw teeth far faster than standard aluminium oxide, reducing sharpening cycle time.

Edge Stability and Minimal Burr Formation

The controlled grit structure produces a crisp, burr-free edge that reduces the need for post-grind honing or deburring of the saw tooth.

Wide Range of Diamond/CBN Concentrations

Tyrolit tailors the abrasive concentration (C50, C75, C100) to the specific saw material and machine capability, balancing wheel life against cut speed perfectly.

Why Tyrolit Saw Sharpening Wheels Maximise Tool Life and Cutting Performance

A poorly sharpened saw blade loses its tension, cuts slowly, and burns the wood or metal. Tyrolit’s sharpening wheels are designed in collaboration with saw blade manufacturers and sharpening service centers to ensure the factory geometry is exactly replicated. The cool cut of the diamond and CBN wheels is paramount: carbide heated above 600°C during sharpening can develop a network of micro-fissures, causing teeth to chip on the first cut. Tyrolit’s bond systems dissipate heat rapidly, keeping the carbide at a safe temperature. For high-volume saw doctoring shops, the consistency of Tyrolit wheels means that once the CNC grinder is programmed for a specific blade type, it produces identical results on every blade, reducing setup time and inspection rejects. The wheels also require less frequent dressing, keeping the sharpening machines productive.

Selecting Diamond/CBN Wheels for Saw Sharpening

Selection depends on the blade material and grinding machine. Carbide tooth face grinding: D91–D126 diamond in a 1A1 or 12A2 wheel. Carbide top grinding: D46–D64 fine diamond in a 6A2 cup wheel. HSS band saw blade grinding: CBN in a softer bond to prevent hardening. Tyrolit provides wheel dimension, arbor, and grit recommendations for all common saw grinder models. Application engineers can also evaluate current sharpening costs and recommend a change of bond or grit that reduces wheel spend per blade.
